Overview
This two-day interactive course, an addition to the Basic Assessment & Support in Intensive Care (BASIC) series, is designed to give participants a structured approach to management of the upper airway.
The course includes pre-course reading (course manual provided), pre-course and post-course MCQs, e-learning, classroom lectures and and skill stations.
Course objectives
The course is designed to give intensive care or anaesthetics trainees a structured approach to management of the upper airway. The main focus will be the skill stations, to develop hands-on expertise in rescue techniques and decision-making in a crisis situation.
Case studies will be used to illustrate situation awareness and decision making.
The course will cover:
- direct and indirect laryngoscopy (video laryngoscopy)
- laryngeal mask airways
- double lumen tube intubation
- bronchoscopy and fibre-optic intubation
- tracheostomy and cricothyrotomy
- intubation planning, airway assessment
- anticipated and unanticipated difficult intubation
- endotracheal tube exchange
- acute upper airway obstruction
- paediatric airway management
Who is it for?
Applicants with minimum 3 months experience of intensive care or anaesthesia with basic upper airway skills.
The course is intended for trainees or advanced critical care practitioners in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM), trainees in Anaesthetics or Emergency Medicine (EM) who have been rotated to ICU.
Numbers are strictly limited.
