The Occupational Lung Disease clinic sees any cases of suspected occupational or environmental lung or airway disease.
We are an NHS service and accept referrals for patients who are registered within NHS England and Wales. We accept referrals from occupational health providers, primary care and hospital-based clinicians from anywhere in the UK.
Our services
- first appointment date within 8 weeks of receipt of a referral letter
- fast-track assessment available on a case-by-case basis
- inhalation challenge testing facilities (specific and non-specific)
- in-house peak-flow analysis
- clinical advice and support by email
- workplace visits and studies on request
We may use the following tests in the assessment of suspected occupational asthma:
- lung function testing
- skin prick testing
- specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) measurement with occupational, exposure-specific allergens
- serial peak-flow recording
- specific occupational inhalation challenge testing
Our department includes an ISO-accredited laboratory service dedicated to specific antibody and aeroallergen measurement for occupational and environmental issues. It is the only site in the UK that carries out beryllium lymphocyte proliferation tests.
How to make a referral
We will need a referral letter from a doctor, occupational health practitioner or other allied healthcare professional, addressed to Dr Johanna Feary or Professor Jo Szram.
Please include the patient’s full name, date of birth, current address, telephone number, GP details and, if possible, NHS number.

We aim to see all new patients within 8 weeks of receiving a referral. We aim to see more urgent cases as soon as possible, on request.
