00;00;00;05 - 00;00;04;23
So you're feeling breathless or you've got some
breathing symptoms... and what we're going to do is
00;00;04;23 - 00;00;09;26
run through a quick breathing checklist to make
sure that your breathing isn't being unhelpful to you.
00;00;09;26 - 00;00;15;01
So, then you can try and work out what might
be causing it. So number one, you want to close your mouth.
00;00;15;01 - 00;00;20;22
If you're breathing [GASPS TWICE] through your mouth,
that's definitely not going to be helping you.
00;00;20;22 - 00;00;23;01
So, number one [SEALS LIPS] close your lips.
00;00;23;01 - 00;00;26;17
Number two, you also want to think about your posture. [SHRUGS SHOULDERS].
00;00;26;17 - 00;00;31;07
Is there lots of tension in your shoulders and your jaw? If
there is [GASPS], drop it out,
00;00;31;07 - 00;00;33;04
have a nice breath out [BREATHES OUT]
00;00;34;06 - 00;00;35;08
to let it go. Okay?
00;00;35;08 - 00;00;38;18
So you're going to be sitting or standing nicely, lips closed.
00;00;39;22 - 00;00;47;12
Number three, can you hear your
breathing is it noisy and can you make it
00;00;47;12 - 00;00;52;18
any quieter? So, if you're breathing with your
lips closed through your nose, the next job...
00;00;54;00 - 00;01;00;27
make your breathing as silent as you can. When
you've achieved that, you want to then think
00;01;00;27 - 00;01;03;08
about where you're breathing in your chest.
00;01;03;08 - 00;01;08;14
So you can put your hands one at the top [UPPER CHEST] one further down [LOWER CHEST].
00;01;08;24 - 00;01;10;15
which hand is moving?
00;01;11;07 - 00;01;19;15
If you can, try as much as you can to keep the lower chest
where the breath is. We breathe from the bottom up.
00;01;20;27 - 00;01;26;00
So, some people like to feel their tummy coming forwards. I prefer to feel my ribs coming out.
00;01;29;13 - 00;01;34;05
So we've got posture, we've clothed closed
our lips, we're breathing through our nose,
00;01;34;05 - 00;01;40;08
we're breathing down to our lower chest. The
next thing is, can you slow that breath down
00;01;40;08 - 00;01;47;28
and get into a nice rhythm. Like the waves on a beach, you want that breath to flow in and flow out.
00;01;47;28 - 00;01;54;11
You don't want it to be juddery or [STRUGGLES FOR BREATH] sharp at all. You want it to be smooth,
00;01;55;06 - 00;02;01;08
in and out. And then can you sit and do that
for a minute. So we'll sit and do that together...
00;02;14;06 - 00;02;15;21
Initially it might feel hard...
00;02;18;01 - 00;02;24;12
but can you keep going? Can you try and
make yourself relax that little bit more?
00;02;28;05 - 00;02;33;01
To get that breathing as good as you can. And if you've managed to go through all of that checklist,
00;02;33;26 - 00;02;38;16
your posture is good, you're breathing through
your nose, you've got it as quiet as it can be,
00;02;38;16 - 00;02;43;24
it's definitely going to the lower part of your
chest and you're trying as best as you can to
00;02;43;24 - 00;02;49;24
get that rhythm. If your symptoms go, great you've
solved the problem. If you're getting any sort of
00;02;49;24 - 00;02;53;23
new cough or you're still feeling breathless,
then you might want to go on to a different
00;02;53;23 - 00;02;58;13
breathing technique, or if you feel like it's
your asthma then follow your asthma action plan.
