Biography
Mr Guido Michielon studied at Padua University, graduating with the highest honour (summa cum laude) before carrying out his clinical training in cardiac surgery in the USA, where he spent five years gaining experience in some of the country’s most renowned cardiac departments.
This included Boston Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he became the senior resident for Professor AR Castaneda and the chief resident for Professor Norwood.
In 2001, he took on the position of attending paediatric cardiac surgeon at Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, Italy, before becoming a specialist in aortic root and paediatric valve repair at the same institution.
In 2012, he was appointed as a paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon at University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands.
Clinical expertise
Mr Michielon’s clinical interests include neonatal repair of complex congenital heart diseases and aortic arch reconstruction and aortic root surgery in paediatric patients. This includes:
- aortic valve repair
- valve-sparing procedures
- stentless aortic valve implantation.
Mr Michielon has expertise in the three-stage Norwood procedure heart surgery for hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
This includes:
- comprehensive Norwood stage one and two
- complex neonatal aortic arch reconstruction
- arterial switch operation for transposition of the great arteries with complex coronary artery patterns
- neonatal repair of pulmonary atresia ventricular septal defect (VSD).
Mr Michielon also has a special expertise in aortic root surgery and complex mitral valve repair in paediatric patients.
He also has valuable experience in heart transplantation for congenital heart disease (CHD) and in the implantation of pneumatic pulsatile paediatric assist devices as a bridge to heart transplantation.
In 2010, he was part of the surgical team that implanted the first axial flow pump – the Jarvick 2000 – in a paediatric patient with heart failure.
Research interests
Mr Michielon’s interests in transplantation focus on failed Fontan procedures. He has coordinated and published a multi-institutional European study on behalf of the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association (ECHSA) on this subject.
