Biography

He completed undergraduate training at The London Hospital Medical College and postgraduate training in the north-west Thames region. This included postgraduate training at Royal Brompton, Harefield and Charing Cross hospitals, and he completed research at Harefield and Royal Brompton hospitals on bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome following lung transplantation.

Areas of expertise

Dr Cairn is a respiratory physician with specialist interests in interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, respiratory infections such as bronchiectasis, cough, asthma and respiratory physiology, which includes the investigation of breathlessness and obstructive sleep apnoea. However, his practice covers all aspects of respiratory medicine. 

Clinical interests

Dr Cairn’s clinic takes place at Harefield Hospital every Friday. He provides a fibre-optic bronchoscopy service and is a member of the lung cancer multidisciplinary panel at Harefield Hospital. He also works as a consultant respiratory and general physician at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

His current clinical governance and teaching interests include interstitial lung disease, the management of pneumonia and oxygen prescribing, and he is a member of West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s antibiotics and medical gas committees.
