Biography

After winning a prestigious international research award in 2002, Dr Baltabaeva moved to London and gained most of her research and clinical experience at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south London.

Areas of expertise

Dr Baltabaeva provides frontline clinical care for cardiology inpatients and outpatients, as well as high-end imaging, such as:

  • echocardiography (including complex modalities such as transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) stress echocardiography and transcranial doppler)
  • cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging.

Under her leadership, the echocardiography department at Wexham Park Hospital has been transformed into a modern and efficient unit and a new transcranial Doppler service has been started at both Harefield and Wexham Park hospitals to improve diagnosis for patients with cryptogenic stroke and/or unexplained heart attacks. She works closely with cardiac surgeons and is a member of the mitral and aortic valve groups.

Research interests

Dr Baltabaeva’s clinical and research interests are intertwined and focus on acute and chronic cardiac remodelling (change in shape and function of the heart) in valvular heart disease, hypertension, coronary artery disease and heart failure.

Her PhD focused on the incidence of arrhythmias in hypertensive heart disease and the effect of antihypertensive treatment on recurrence of atrial fibrillation.

She has published 20 peer-reviewed papers and more than 50 competitive abstracts, has spoken at national and International meetings, and is a regular peer reviewer for European Journal of Echocardiography, Circulation and Hypertension.

As a core lab cardiologist for a multicentre international trial, Dr Baltabaeva has set standards for cardiac imaging and educated her peers on complex echo modalities.
