Biography
Dr James Ware is an honorary consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and a Reader in genomic medicine at Imperial College London.
Dr Ware studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 2000. He continued his clinical training in Cambridge, London and Geneva, Switzerland, before focusing on cardiology. He received his PhD from MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, funded by a fellowship from the Wellcome Trust. He undertook post-doctoral research at Imperial College, Harvard Medical School, and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
In 2018, Dr Ware was promoted to Reader in Genomic Medicine by the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London to recognise his academic contributions to the field.
Areas of expertise
Dr Ware's primary expertise is in cardiovascular genetics. His clinical interests include:
- diagnosis and management of inherited cardiac conditions (ICCs), particularly
- cardiopmyopathies
- inherited arrhythmia syndromes
- evaluation of families in which there has been a sudden unexplained death that might represent a genetic condition and genetic testing for ICCs.
Research
As a researcher, Dr Ware's main research interest is to understand the impact of genetic variation on the heart and circulation, and to use genome information to improve patient care. He is closely involved with the Clinical Genome Resource (cardiovascular domain expert panel) and Genomics England (GeCIP cardiovascular domain), alongside other projects.
Dr Ware's research group spans the Royal Brompton Hospital Cardiovascular Research Centre, where he co-leads the ICC research programme, the National Heart & Lung Institute, and the Medical Research Council (MRC) London Institute of Medical Science at Imperial College London. Research carried out in his early career has resulted in national and international prizes, including from the British Cardiovascular Society, the Heart Rhythm Society and the Royal Society of Medicine.
The research programme is supported by the Wellcome Trust, the British Heart Foundation, the Medical Research Council (UK), the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre, and the Rosetrees Trust.
He is also closely involved with the Clinical Genome Resource, Genomics England and the Transforming Genetic Medicine Initiative.
