Biography
Dr Amanda Sathyapala (previously Natanek) studied at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 1996, before pursuing further studies at the University of Oxford, finishing in 1999. She then gained her MRCP status in London in 2002 and her PhD in Medicine from Imperial College London in 2011.
Dr Sathyapala trained at Barts and The London NHS Trust, North West London Hospitals NHS Trust, and Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust.
She has specific clinical and research experience in:
- COPD
- respiratory failure
- domiciliary non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
- sleep disorders.
Areas of expertise
Dr Sathyapala is honorary consultant respiratory physician at Harefield Hospital and clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College London.
Her areas of expertise include:
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- respiratory failure
- sleep disordered breathing
- domiciliary nocturnal ventilation.
Research
Dr Sathyapala was awarded the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship (2006 to 2009) and the HEFCE Clinical Senior Lectureship (2012 to date). She conducts research into muscle wasting in COPD at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.

Dr Sathyapala is a reviewer for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Thorax, European Respiratory Journal, Chest and the Journal of Respiratory Physiology & Neurobiology.
