Episode 9: How a patient pioneered his own surgical procedure
In this episode, the story begins at the start of the millenium, when Tal Golesworthy, who was born with Marfan syndrome - a genetic disorder of the connective tissue, was confronted with the prospect of major heart surgery to replace his aorta, which was weakening as a result of his condition. The idea of major surgery, and the lifelong dependency on blood thinning medicine it would bring, was enough for Tal, an engineer by trade, to explore an alternative route.
Together with Professor John Pepper, cardiac surgeon at Royal Brompton Hospital, Tal went on to engineer a revolutionary device that would eventually become a viable alternative to total aortic replacement.
