The work of our clinicians is supported by advanced diagnostic and research imaging services.
We have a track record of significant investment in imaging technology, allowing us to diagnose many patients without the need for invasive procedures.
Scanning technology
We use advanced computerised tomography (CT) scanners at both hospitals. Our CT scanners can diagnose early coronary heart disease by generating very precise images of the heart.
We carry out cardiac angiograms in seven dedicated catheter laboratories across both hospitals.
The latest computed radiography (CR) and PACS systems were installed in 2009. The imaging departments at both hospitals operate in a filmless environment. This means that images can immediately be accessed in various areas including the wards, ITU, surgical theatres and outpatients. Digital images can also be sent and received from other healthcare facilities.
Royal Brompton Hospital imaging
- Plain X-rays
- Mobile X-rays on the wards or in the operating theatres
- Barium studies to show the gastrointestinal tract
- Ultrasound scanning
- Nuclear scans and tests
- Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging
- Bone densitometry (DEXA)
- CT scanning with a 64-slice CT scanner or the advanced Dual Source Flash scanner
Harefield Hospital imaging
- Plain X-rays (chest and general radiography)
- Fluoroscopic procedures
- Ultrasound (US) and Doppler scans
- Nuclear scans and tests
- Multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning
US and MSCT guided thoracic and other invasive procedures are performed in the catheter laboratories at Harefield Hospital. A PET-CT service is provided at an external site.
