Professor Anita Simonds, consultant in respiratory and sleep medicine, was awarded the European Respiratory Society’s (ERS) Yernault Lecture Award at its international congress last week.
The prestigious award honours active members of the ERS who have made an outstanding contribution to education in respiratory medicine or the allied professions. As part of the award, Professor Simonds gave a lecture entitled: Growing up on a ventilator – a learning curve. She discussed the outcomes of non-invasive ventilation in children and young adults, and the challenges faced by patients, particularly those with neuromuscular disease.
Professor Simonds said:
I am extremely honoured to have received this award and to have been invited to present the Yernault lecture.
I was able to share with international colleagues the pioneering work that takes place in Royal Brompton’s Centre for Sleep, where the team has revolutionised the use of non-invasive ventilation in adults and children with respiratory conditions.
A number of consultants from the Trust attended the ERS congress last week, which this year was held in London. The congress is the largest meeting in the world in the respiratory field and is a forum for presenting new cutting-edge research, alongside educational sessions and networking events. Trust consultants presented to the congress on various aspects of respiratory health, including severe asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD).
