Biography

Professor Thomas Lüscher studied medicine at the University of Zurich, specialising in internal medicine and cardiology. He trained in cardiovascular research and echocardiography at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA, later becoming Professor of Pharmacotherapy at the University of Basel. 

He then went on to a position as an interventional cardiologist and Professor of Cardiology at the University of Berne, and then as Professor and Chairman of Cardiology Director of the University Heart Centre at University Hospital Zurich and Director of the Centre of Molecular Cardiology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Professor Lüscher is a consultant cardiologist and director of research, education and development working at both Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals.

His clinical expertise includes:

  • preventional medicine for conditions such as hypertension, lipid disorders and diabetes
  • coronary artery disease, including angina pectoris and myocardial infarction
  • heart failure
  • pharmacotherapy
  • cardiac catheterisations
  • percutaneous coronary procedures such as balloon angioplasty and stenting
  • non-coronary interventions such as percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale, TAVI and renal nerve ablation.

Research interests

Professor Lüscher has a vast selection of research interests within cardiology. These include:

  • vascular disease
  • the role of endothelium-derived mediators in the regulation of vascular tone and structure
  • platelet-vessel wall interactions
  • coagulation in ageing
  • hypertension
  • lipid disorders
  • atherosclerosis
  • inflammation
  • heart disease
  • acute coronary syndromes.

He is continuing his role with the Centre for Molecular Cardiology, Zurich and the Zurich Heart House Foundation for Cardiovascular Research with the view to establish collaborations with the UK on research projects. 

Publications and awards

Professor Lüscher is one of the world’s most cited scientists and has mentored numerous other physicians and scientists across the globe. Throughout his career, Professor Lüscher has received many awards and research prizes as well as many prestigious lectureships worldwide.

He sits on a number of editorial boards, and has taken the European Society of Cardiology’s flagship publication, European heart Journal to become the world’s top journal for cardiovascular medicine. 

He continues this work with the publication as editor-in-chief in his role at the Trust and been published extensively with over 500 research papers, over 200 reviews and many book chapters on the topic of cardiovascular medicine.
