Biography

Dr Shouvik Haldar studied medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Medical School (now part of King's College London), before completing his general medical training at the Oxford Deanery. He specialised in cardiology and continued training at the North West Thames Cardiology Training Programme and also at the Trust. 

He did his postgraduate degree at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London, obtaining his Specialist Registration (CCT) in Cardiology/General Medicine in January 2016.

Before Dr Haldar joined the Trust as a consultant in 2017, he was awarded the Mirium L Burnett Fellowship in Electrophysiology and Devices at the University of Toronto. This helped him further his experience and training by working alongside world-renowned experts in this field. 

Areas of expertise

Dr Haldar is a consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist, based at Harefield Hospital, but works across both sites. His areas of expertise include:

• cardiac arrhythmias
• valve disorders
• electrocardiology
• heart failure
• hypertension
• ischaemic heart disease
• cardiac devices. 

Research interests

Dr Haldar completed a Medical Doctorate research degree (MD Res) studying interventional techniques in the management of Atrial Fibrillation, at the National Heart and Lung Institute, at Imperial College London, and was awarded a £1.4 million NIHR research grant to conduct a randomised control trial comparing different modalities of ablation.

His research interests include:

• Electrophysiology
• Catheter ablation
• Atrial fibrillation

Publications and teaching

Dr Haldar has a strong research record, publishing many peer-reviewed articles, and spoken at many international conferences and meetings in the US and Europe. He is passionate about medical education and is an author and series editor for the 'Challenging Concepts' Series of medical textbooks, published by Oxford University Press. 

He is the co-founder and director of the London Arrhythmia Summit, which is an annual conference for electrophysiologists and arrhythmia specialists, looking at the latest advances in the field. He is heavily involved in the British Cardiovascular Society and founded and co-directs the Year in Cardiology symposium since its inception in 2011.

Dr Haldar is also currently Chair of the British Cardiovascular Society education division, helping to shape cardiology education in the UK and beyond.
