Dr Martin Carby is a consultant respiratory physician, based at Harefield Hospital, with clinical and teaching experience and expertise.

Biography

He trained at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, qualifying in 1995, and went on to specialise in respiratory medicine before joining the Trust in 2003.

Areas of expertise

Dr Carby has clinical expertise in lung transplantation and respiratory failure.

Dr Carby’s latest research focuses on improving outcomes in lung transplant recipients, addressing the risk factors for and interventions alleviating obliterative bronchiolitis in the transplanted lung.

Teaching

Dr Carby is a clinical tutor at Harefield Hospital and a member of the training programme management groups for regional core medical trainees and respiratory medicine trainees.

He established the STaR Centre and supervises simulation-based team training across the hospital to improve patient safety. He also runs regional and national courses for respiratory medicine and bronchoscopy skills.

Publications

As well as being a reviewer for Thorax, an international peer-reviewed journal for respiratory medicine, Dr Carby has had a number of research papers published by organisations including the European Respiratory Society and American Thoracic Society.

Dr Carby has written chapters for a number of prestigious publications, including the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the British Journal of Transplantation.
