Biography
Dr Margarita Burmester has studied in Canada, at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, and at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.
She became interested in simulation training when she was consultant intensivist at Boston Children’s Hospital. In 2008, Dr Burmester co-founded the SPRinT (simulated paediatric resuscitation team training) programme at Royal Brompton Hospital to enhance patient safety through high-level team training in the clinical environment.
This award-winning programme trains over 100 senior multidisciplinary staff from across the Trust each year and is quality assured through its ongoing collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital’s simulation programme.
Research interests
Dr Burmester has led research in innovative adult learning techniques and translation into clinical effectiveness and improvement.
Teaching
Dr Burmester is London Deanery STeLI (Simulation & Technology-enhanced Learning Initiative) trained facilitator and a graduate of the simulation instructors workshop at the Boston Children’s Hospital.
She is a founding member of the CSSC (Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre) – a joint venture between Royal Brompton and The Royal Marsden hospitals.
Dr Burmester sits on the board of directors of IPSSW (International Pediatric Simulation Symposia & Workshops) and is secretary and research lead for the PICSELS (Paediatric Intensive Care Society Education, Learning and Simulation) group.
