A brand new intensive therapy unit and state-of-the-art imaging suite are the latest in a series of significant improvements at Harefield Hospital following an investment programme of more than £18 million.
At Royal Brompton Hospital an investment of nearly £2 million has seen the building of new critical care rooms and a refurbished adult intensive care unit (AICU).
Patients at Harefield have also been welcomed to a brand new ward and outpatients’ facility, with further refurbishments taking place on existing wards.
Expanded ITU and new imaging centre at Harefield Hospital
The intensive therapy team at Harefield Hospital can now treat 250 more critically ill people each year, including patients suspected of having tuberculosis or other serious infectious diseases, in two brand new isolation rooms. Furthermore, an innovative new sun therapy terrace will allow patients to receive their care outside when weather permits, benefitting from fresh air and sunlight.
The new imaging centre contains brand new, state-of-the-art MRI and CT scanners, offering patients the very latest in diagnostic technology.
Brand new critical care rooms at Royal Brompton Hospital
Royal Brompton Hospital’s AICU has two brand new isolation rooms, and a fully refurbished 18-bed ward which provides a hi-tech space to treat some of the hospital’s sickest patients.
Adopting evidence from arts in health programmes, the isolation rooms feature calming coastal images to enhance the healing environment. And, in a UK first, they have a small, furnished area for family members, giving them the chance to be close to their critically ill loved ones for longer periods of time.
The working space around the beds is much larger than average, giving medical staff the space they need to deliver world-class care, while a dedicated handwashing station in each room will aid infection prevention.
Director of planning and strategy Piers McCleery, who led the re-development programme, said: “These improvements will all contribute to the gold standard of care our teams provide, and to giving patients the best possible experience.”
