Carboxyhemoglobin associated with hemolysis as a marker of impending oxygenator failure in VA ECMO.

Abstract

Veno-Arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) is an advanced method of organ support. Hemolysis is a recognised complication of an extracorporeal circulation. Indicators of intravascular hemolysis are presence of plasma free haemoglobin, elevated levels of LDH, unconjugated belirubin and carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb). Normal COHb is readily measured by blood gas analyser (ABL800 FLEX blood gas analyser, Radiometer Medical ApS, Denmark). Samples from every patient were taken every hour and postoxygenatoe every six hours.
