On Tuesday 28 February, Royal Brompton Hospital, along with NIHR Rare Diseases Translational Research Collaboration, will be hosting their annual rare disease day - helping to raise awareness of rare diseases and the millions of families who are affected by them.

There will be stands showcasing our hospital research into rare diseases, as well as the work we are doing as part of The 100,000 Genomes Project. This project, involving genetic sequencing of patients and family members with rare diseases such as primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and dilated cardiomyopathy, aims to help improve future diagnosis and treatments.

Fun activities to help explain how gene changes might affect health include:

  • what’s in a pancake?
  • making DNA bracelets
  • strawberry DNA extraction.
