Associate director of research


Jenny Rivers

Jenny joined the Trust in April 2016, having worked most recently as research and knowledge exchange manager at the University of Liverpool. 

  

Jenny has a PhD in biochemistry, has worked in industry as a postdoctoral researcher and has a broad range of experience in research management. This includes:

 

  • business development
  • collaborative research funding
  • developing and implementing research strategy and policy
  • communication and dissemination of research opportunities and outcomes
  • postgraduate research administration. 


In her role as associate director of research, Jenny will work with the Trust director of research, the research office and researchers across the Trust to support the excellent research that we do and to oversee delivery of the research strategy.

Jayne is currently managing the roll-out of the EDGE research management and recruitment system to Trust research delivery staff and works with other members of the team on strategic research projects, research contracts and performance reporting.

 

She joined the Trust in August 2016 on secondment from the NIHR Clinical Research Network North-West London (CRN: NWL), providing maternity cover for the research development manager, Laura Henderson. At the CRN she worked as research operations manager, focusing on NHS permissions for NIHR portfolio studies in Trusts across the region, including acute, mental health and primary care. 

 

Prior to joining CRN: NWL in 2012, she worked in research management and governance at the NIHR CRN coordinating centre.

Rahima uses her knowledge of research funding schemes and procedures to assist Trust researchers at all levels with their grant and fellowship applications. 


As part of the research development team, she also works to promote research and highlights achievements within the Trust. 


Rahima has substantial experience in research and knowledge of funding in higher education, gained through her PhD in physiology and her work as a postdoctoral research scientist at the UCL Institute of Neurology.

Laura Henderson

Laura’s current role is primarily in grant and fellowship mentorship for all active Trust researchers. She also leads a communication team which broadcasts Trust successes in research. 


Laura began working in an NHS research and development environment in 2004 as a trials co-ordinator and has since taken up various roles covering trial management and research governance. With a background in biochemistry, she is also undertaking an MSc in clinical research.

     

Ira Jakupovic

Ira is primarily responsible for the set up and maintenance of the quality management system (QMS) to ensure appropriate oversight, management and administration of clinical research in the Trust. 


Ira provides advice to all researchers initiating Trust-sponsored clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs). She assists with:


  • writing study protocols
  • negotiating study-wide contracts
  • obtaining ethics and regulatory approvals
  • compliance with regulatory requirements.

 

Ira is responsible for audit and monitoring of all clinical research in the Trust. She is supported by the Clinical Research Oversight Committee (Clin-ROC) which oversees clinical delivery of research within the Trust. Ira holds a BSc (Hons) in biochemistry and microbiology, and an MSc in molecular biology.

Susana’s current role is in study set up, governance review, costings and contracts, as well as supporting the delivery and recruitment of industry-sponsored research studies. 


Since 2010, Susana has worked within the NHS in a variety of roles including feasibility studies, non-commercial research contracts and management of participant recruitment data in different research and development environments. 


Educated to a master’s level at Goldsmiths College, London, Susana also regularly attends meetings, seminars and training relevant to clinical research as well as research and development.

Carolyn-Mill

Carolyn works on the set up and delivery of commercial research within the Trust. This involves negotiating contracts and budgets with industry sponsors, and working with study teams and support departments to ensure the Trust has capacity and capability to deliver a study successfully. Carolyn also works with research teams to monitor study recruitment in order to ensure targets are met within the agreed timescales.

 

Previously, Carolyn worked within the commercial clinical trials office at Kings College London. During her time there, she gained experience in the set-up, delivery, reporting and financial management of commercial research. She has an honours degree in Sociology. 

Patrik Pettersson

Patrik leads a team of three in the non-commercial team who advise investigators and their teams about research governance, NIHR processes, compliance and other research-related issues including financing and contracts. 


He has several years of experience in research governance and before Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust he worked in various large London NHS trusts including Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and University College London Hospitals. He is originally from Sweden.

Tom Caumont

Tom works on the governance and management of the Trust’s non-commercially sponsored research. 


He undertakes reviews of clinical research applications for submission to Health Research Authority, Research Ethics Committee, and risk assessment for Trust sponsorship. He also negotiates material transfer agreements and is an EDGE database super-user. 


Tom previously worked for the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility, the Kent and Medway Research Network, Richmond Pharmacology and the UCL Cancer Trials Centre. He has an honours degree in physiotherapy.

Ellie joined the research office in 2015 as the non-commercial research administrator, having previously worked at the Trust within the respiratory medicine department.  


She has many years of administrative and managerial experience within the NHS.

Ryan Jones

Ryan works within the quality and safety team to oversee high-level compliance with the Human Tissue Authority’s (HTA) licensing requirements and tissue governance frameworks. 


He ensures that relevant statutory and regulatory requirements across all licensable sectors are met, and issues are resolved in a timely manner. 


Ryan is a former biomedical scientist, who has also worked in research and the private sector, and is experienced in working to Human Tissue Authority (HTA), Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA), ISO manufacturing and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) regulations.

Veronica Tudor

Veronica has a scientific background, having been trained in Romania as an epidemiologist. Before starting her present role, she did an internship at European Medicine Agency working in the pharmacovigilance department and worked as clinical research associate in a central nervous system specialised clinical research organisation. 


She is currently doing an MSc in clinical research with Cardiff University and has experience in clinical research. 


She is responsible for the monitoring of all Trust-sponsored studies, ensuring that they are conducted, recorded and reported in accordance with good clinical practice and applicable regulatory requirements.

Peter Lloyd

Peter has been a technical IT specialist in the healthcare sector, primarily in the NHS, since 1995. His expertise lies in identifying and creating systems solutions which include:


database design and development

internet and extranet implementation

application security. 


He is responsible for all information management systems used in the research office and manages the research sections of the internet, intranet and extranet.

Winston, who has an MSc in medical statistics, joined the trust in 2008 as medical statistician. 


He worked previously at MRC Laboratories in the Gambia (West Africa) and at Imperial College, London. Winston is heavily involved in the design and analysis of Trust studies. 


He has contributed to the publication of several important scientific papers in reputable journals and also provides teaching, in collaboration with Imperial College's NHLI staff.

Paula joined the Trust in 1989 and secured her first research nurse position in 1994. Following several years undertaking research with patients in the transplant unit, Paula worked in the pharmaceutical industry in a research development role. 


Paula returned to the Trust in 2010 and works at Harefield Hospital. She provides mentorship to the research delivery team which includes nurses, physiologists and physiotherapists. Paula has secured two small grants which have allowed her to become Principal Investigator for her own studies. 


She works closely with the Research Quarterly Forum to develop meeting agendas which reflect the learning needs of the Trust’s research delivery team. Paula has a BSc in Nursing, a MSc in Advanced Nursing Practice and sits as an expert member of a Research Ethics Committee.

Respiratory biomedical research unit


Tracy Higgins

Tracy Higgins is the manager of the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) in Respiratory Disease at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College London, and project manager for the UK Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Consortium.


Tracy trained as an administration manager and in 2000 joined Imperial College as the laboratory manager for the Gene Therapy Group, becoming the Consortium's project manager in 2006. 


In 2008 the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College were awarded BRU status for their Respiratory and Cardiovascular programmes and Tracy has been the Respiratory BRU manager since then.


Tracy's responsibilities include: 


  • extensive financial management and contracting across numerous stakeholders
  • setting up and overseeing core facilities
  • running internal funding competitions
  • coordinating multi-centre grant submissions
  • linking the BRU nationwide with other NIHR infrastructure. 

 


Recently Tracy became the first chair of the NIHR National BRC/U Managers Working Group, the aim of which is to bring together managers from the BRCs and BRUs to identify common challenges and initiate work packages to deliver solutions for those challenges. 


Tracy also chairs the NIHR National BRC/U Patient and Public Involvement/Engagement Group.

Clare Louise Fulk is the operations manager of the NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in respiratory disease at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College London (BRU). 


Clare trained as a general manager and joined the Trust in 2014 where she is responsible for the operational management of the whole BRU and particularly the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) by working in partnership with the BRU Director, BRU Manager, Assistant Manager, and senior clinical and non-clinical staff. 


Clare’s responsibilities include: 


  • line management of core facility managers, CRF team and BRU Coordinator 
  • human resource management across the BRU
  • overseeing quality management within the core facilities
  • facilities management of the CRF
  • developing new policies and processes
  • adapting existing processes to meet the needs of the service.

Zahra works as the research communications coordinator, helping to promote the research that is carried out at the Trust to various stakeholders including our partners, funders, patients and the general public. 


She is also the lead for patient and public involvement (PPI) in research with the aim to encourage researchers to actively involve patient representatives and members of the public in all stages of the research process. She does this by facilitating a platform for patients and researchers to discuss research and organise ways to present findings to a wider public audience through patient events and the development of reviewing tools. 


Zahra also works in public engagement through the organisation of small and large scale events for researchers, patients and the public. She is involved with the communications team to promote and design ways to best communicate the research that is carried out at the Trust. 


Zahra has an honours degree in Biomedical Science and a Masters in Public Health. Her previous experience involved working as a PR advisor for GP surgeries and an educator for patients with diabetes.


Cardiovascular biomedical research unit


Geraldine Sloane

Geraldine Sloane is the manager of the NIHR cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit at Royal Brompton & Harefield Foundation Trust and Imperial College London (BRU).


Geraldine is a qualified nurse, and worked in a variety of clinical specialities within the NHS prior to moving into clinical research. 


Geraldine joined the clinical pharmacology division of a large pharmaceutical company in 1992, working as a study coordinator and clinical manager across a range of early phase trials, including first time in man, proof of concept, and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies within a variety of therapeutic areas.


She joined a large CRO in 2000, working as a project manager and as clinical and business operation directors in an early phase trials unit.

Geraldine joined the BRU in 2012 after three years working in clinical research within the NHS.


Geraldine manages the clinical and administrative team within the BRU, with overall responsibility for financial management of the unit, oversight of internal funding competitions, operational activities and management of the biobank.

Julia Coffey

Julia started working in this role in 2010 and has experience of collaborative working in both research decision making and public engagement planning and delivery. 


She works with researchers, patients, public, patient representative bodies and non-health organisations to develop active partnerships which involve:


  • creative, collaborative public engagement projects 
  • developing public engagement and science communication including science events, open days, café scientifiques, I'm a scientist
  • supporting and developing the role of research patient partnerships - resources, training, facilitation
  • public science communication - production of on-line news articles, newsletters, leaflets. 

  

Julia’s previous work experience has involved working in public involvement, service development and research. 


This has included working in primary care, acute health services and organisations such as Cochrane Collaboration, Picker Institute, British Heart Foundation and Kings College London.
