Institute of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science fifth annual symposium 

Date: 21 September 2016 

 

The theme of the symposium was 'The Future of Cardiovascular Medicine'. Keynote speakers included Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, Professor John Pepper and Professor Dennis Kehoe.

Research open day

The Trust opened its doors to visitors for its sixth annual heart and lung research open day. Over 100 people took part, including students from schools and colleges, family members, patients, Trust researchers and academic partners from Imperial College London.



Royal Brompton Hospital Rare Diseases Day 2016

Date: Monday 29 February 2016 

The hospital marked Rare Diseases Day by asking patients and the public to write or draw messages of support, inspiration and hope for rare diseases on our message canvas. Researchers were on hand to provide information and answer questions about the heart and lung rare diseases we research.

A workshop developed by Macmillan looking at how the patients, carers and the public can get involved to help create the best research for patients. Patients/public and researchers looked at the different types of research methods and terms used in research and explored the issues related to becoming and being a member of the public involved in research.


Heart and Lung Convenience Store

Trust researchers working in cardiovascular research took part in this year's NHLI pop-up science flagship public engagement project, The Heart and Lung Convenience Store, funded by the Wellcome Trust. On 26 October, visitors to the store found out how research has led to new ways in treating heart rhythm problems in people with complex hearts.

As part of the centenary celebrations at Harefield Hospital, we held a research open day to look at how research is changing patient care. Pop-up surgery, making heart valves and an artificially breathing lung were just some of the many fun and informative activities that were on offer to visitors.

Our researchers took part in the schools day on Friday 8 May with a genetics stand "Your GENEration" . This was an opportunity for primary school pupils to find out about genes through hands-on activities including making DNA bracelets and looking at common traits they share.

Technopop is an exciting pop-up Science, Technology and Innovation Festival aimed at 6 to 19 year olds.

Cardiology and physics researchers from our cardiovascular biomedical research unit are taking part in talks and mentoring sessions in week four: sports and science and the human body

The NIHR BRU hosted a careers in health and research event with presentations from doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professionals. The event was aimed at students aged 15-19 years, interested in careers in research and/or health.


The Heart and Lung Repair Shop

This summer an empty retail unit in Hammersmith’s Kings Mall will be temporarily transformed into the Heart & Lung Repair Shop. Creative and curious visitors to of all ages can discover how these vital organs are far more complex than any car engine, central heating boiler or air conditioning system, and learn about what it takes to repair them.

 

This event was organised by the National Heart and Lung Institute.

Dr Ranil de Silva and Dr Alistair Lindsay took part in a public discussion held by the cardiovascular biomedical research unit on the latest research on coronary artery disease, which remains one of the largest healthcare challenges worldwide.

Dr James Hull discussed the latest research into asthma and exercise induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) at this evening event for the general public. Patients and the public were encouraged to attend this free discussion and have the opportunity to find out more about the research that takes place at the Royal Brompton Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit.

Science for New Frontiers

As part of National Science and Engineering Week 2014, our cardiac physiologist team and respiratory researchers ran demonstrations at the 11th annual schools science conference held by the Royal College of Pathologists. School students from across London had the opportunity to participate in mixture of presentations, workshops, interactive hands-on demonstrations and displays, meeting with scientists eager to share their knowledge of particular areas of science.

Genetics and genomics laboratory opening ceremony

Families living with inherited cardiac conditions joined us for the opening ceremony of our new genetics and genomics laboratory. They were given a lab tour and met with our researchers and Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, who officially opened this brand new facility at Royal Brompton.

 

NHLI Bring your children to work

An interactive 'science station' hosted by a team of Royal Brompton experts at the Natural History Museum, attracted hundreds of visitors keen to learn about how our cardiologists are able to study a person’s beating heart using advanced imaging and new electrophysiological techniques. 


Imperial Fringe event: What Makes Me Me?

Researchers set up two interactive stands at the Imperial Science Festival looking at DNA extraction and cystic fibrosis; and heARTworks, exploring the wonders of the heart as the body's  hardest working muscle.

Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Day  

Date: Wednesday 10 October 2012

The interstitial lung disease team hosted an event for research active patients diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and their relatives. The event attracted over 70 participants’ travelling from as far away as Devon and Manchester and was organised by Anne-Marie Russell.
