Mayor Boris Johnson, and chair of the London Assembly, Jennette Arnold, gave all party unanimous support to Royal Brompton Hospital’s children’s heart surgery unit during Mayor’s Question Time on Wednesday 14 September.
Mr Johnson said: "I think what everyone will want to see is services in London protected and what people don’t want to see is, whatever the reforms reason, that London has been particularly disadvantaged because people feel that London gets too 'good a deal' anyway. There are wonderful centres of excellence in this city and I wouldn’t want to see any sign, that there had been any discrimination against London."
Speaking in support of Royal Brompton, assembly member Victoria Borwick asked the Mayor to, "go into battle for Londoners and all those that have had their lives saved and will have their lives saved at this centre of excellence". Reminding the Assembly that Royal Brompton’s research had recently been recognised by a substantial government grant, she continued, "as you are probably aware, there is currently a review of the proposal on the closure. So we want to count on your support to make representations to the review, on behalf of Londoners for the need for these cardiac centres of excellence… for heaven’s sakes, let's make the best of what London offers, in order that we can generally have these centres of excellence, which can make us internationally proud".
The Mayor concluded: "That’s right. And certainly, one of the things we want to send around the world is a message about the extreme success of some of London’s top hospitals and it is important therefore that we do concentrate excellence where we can and that we have generally outstanding centres of clinical care".
Jennette Arnold, chair of the Assembly, concluded:"Can I just reiterate that there is all party support and there was total unanimous support for the work you are doing Victoria, on this very important issue".
