Biography
Mr Shahzad Raja qualified at King Edward Medical College, Lahore as Gold Medallist and best all-round graduate in 1996. He passed his membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2001 and Intercollegiate Board Examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2009. He received his specialty training in cardiothoracic surgery at Glasgow University Hospitals, Harefield Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Areas of expertise
Mr Raja’s main interest lies in surgical myocardial revascularisation and aortic surgery. He is trained to perform off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery and minimally invasive aortic valve replacement.
Teaching
Mr Raja has served on the panel of question writers for the membership examination of the Royal College of Surgeons, England.
He is the course lead for the Harefield cardiothoracic review course at the STaR Centre, and has also lectured on courses for the MRCS examination.
Publications
Mr Raja has published widely on all aspects of cardiac surgery with over 100 peer reviewed publications. He has a special interest in assessing the impact of off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery in improving outcomes and has co-edited two books:

He has contributed chapters to different cardiac surgery textbooks as well as to undergraduate and postgraduate surgery books, and has edited and co-edited books for the MRCS examination. He regularly peer reviews for a number of cardiac surgery journals and is a member of the editorial board of Recent Patents on Cardiovascular Drug Discovery.
