Biography
Professor Susanna Price trained at King's College London, and continued training in cardiology and intensive care medicine at a number of centres, including St Thomas', St George's and Royal Brompton hospitals, London. During her cardiology training, she undertook a fellowship in echocardiography at the Thoraxcenter under Jos Roelandt.
On completion of her training, she was awarded the Jill Dando GUCH fellowship, allowing her to train for a further two years in imaging and management of the critically ill grown up congenital heart disease (GUCH) patients.
Areas of expertise
Professor Price has trained extensively in cardiology and intensive care medicine, and her main areas of expertise are:
- critical care cardiology, including extracorporeal support and adult congenital heart disease
- echocardiography for valvular heart disease and intensive care peri-procedural transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE), including transcatheter valves (TAVI and MitraClip), GUCH intervention, and perioperative TOE
- assessment and management of critically ill cardiothoracic patients - particularly in relation to acute GUCH, cardiogenic shock, and severe acute valvular disease
- transoesophageal echocardiography for cardiac surgery, including GUCH, extracorporeal support and all aspects of perioperative, periprocedural and critical care echocardiography.
Memberships
Professor Price is a Board member, councillor and chair of the ESC Education Committee, immediate past-President of the ESC Acute Cardiovascular Care Association, and sits on numerous ESC committees and the ALS subcommittee of RCUK. She is a deputy editor of the European Heart Journal. She has been a member of a number of task forces relating to international guidelines and position papers on the management of cardiovascular diseases including valvular disease, endocarditis, non-cardiac surgery, pulmonary hypertension, pericardial disease, cardiovascular disease in pregnancy and ACHD, ECMO, and echocardiography in critical care.
Publications
Professor Price has published numerous papers and book chapters ranging from basic echocardiography to adult congenital heart disease in critical care, and lectures worldwide.
Awards
In 2021, Professor Price received Honorary Membership of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) for her exceptional contribution to the ESICM and the speciality of intensive care medicine over a prolonged period.
