Biography

Dr Richard Grocott-Mason has been a consultant cardiologist for over 22 years. He is the chief executive of the Heart, Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, which comprises Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, the cardiovascular, lung and critical care services at St Thomas’ Hospital and Guys’ Hospital, and the diagnostic and outpatient centre at 77 Wimpole Street.

Dr Grocott-Mason graduated from Jesus College, Oxford and St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London, qualifying in 1986. He has been a consultant cardiologist since 1999, initially at Harefield Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital. He is an interventional cardiologist and one of the co-founders of the Harefield primary angioplasty service in 2004. He continued as part of the team at Harefield Hospital's heart attack centre until November 2021. He continues to run a weekly general adult cardiology out-patient clinic.

In 2013 he was promoted from clinical director for medicine to be joint medical director and responsible officer at Hillingdon Hospital, before joining Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals full time in 2014.  He was appointed as medical director and responsible officer of Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust in 2015. From July 2019, he led the RBH-King’s Health Partners Cardiovascular and Respiratory programme, which culminated in the merger of Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust with Guys’ and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in February 2021.

Richard has a particular interest in the integration and transformation of clinical services for the future.  The ambition of the clinical group is to create a world-leading academic centre for heart, lung and critical care medicine.

Publications

Dr Grocott-Mason has published over 60 papers and case reports over his career on topics ranging from basic science to long-term outcomes from cardiac transplantation and aortic valve replacement.
