Respiratory medicine

Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust is a world leader in the diagnosis, management and treatment of lung disease. We treat patients from across the UK and abroad for the full range of respiratory disorders and have one of the world’s largest lung disease patient populations.

.

Our work

Our cystic fibrosis centre, Europe’s largest, has pioneered new treatments, including aerosol antiobiotics and the medical treatment of bowel obstruction. We are the largest centre in Europe for the provision of respiratory support for patients at home.

As a leading European respiratory research centre, we have, with our partner the National Heart and Lung Institute, pioneered research that has set national standards for treatment, for instance for sleep services and ventilatory support.

The services we offer

Asthma and allergy

We have expertise in the treatment of difficult asthma, allergic asthma, corticosteroid resistant asthma, occupational asthma, allergies, rhinitis and other nasal problems.

Interstitial lung disease / fibrosing lung disease

ILD is a term used for a group of more than 100 separate disorders that commonly afect the tissue and space around the air sacs in the lung.

We diagnose and manage all forms of this condition, including sarcoidosis, lung problems in rheumatological diseases and vasculitis. High resolution CT (computerised tomography) is used for diagnosis and prognosis.

Chronic lung infection

We treat all types of lung infection and have special expertise in bronchiectasis, primary ciliary diskinesia, antibody deficiency, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillus and mycobacterial infections.

Occupational and environmental lung disease

We have the busiest occupational and environmental lung disease service in Europe, dealing with occupational asthma, asebestos-related disease, extrinsic allergic alveolitis, pneumoconiosis including silicosis and hard metal disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

We treat COPD through medication, nutritional advice, pulmonary rehabilitation and other methods. Our research helped establish the national guidelines for dealing with COPD and we are currently investigating lung volume reduction treatment.

Respiratory failure

We see patients with difficult-to-manage acute and chronic respiratory failure admitted from hospitals from around the UK.

Ventilation at home

We provide home ventilation support for adults and children with neuromuscular and chest wall conditions such as muscular dystrophy and curvature of the spine. We have over 1,000 patients in this programme, making it the largest in Europe.

Sleep disordered breathing

We are one of the three largest centres for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for sleep apnoea. We have a dedicated sleep clinic for investigating the nature of patients' sleep disorders.

Cystic fibrosis

We have the largest dedicated centre for cystic fibrosis in Europe, currently treating over 1,000 patients. Our experts have pioneered major advances in treatment of the condition.

Lung cancer

Our surgical oncology team provide specialist respiratory and thoracic surgical services for the diagnosis and management of lung cancer – in both the primary and metastatic setting.
