In July 2016, NHS England announced plans to decommission congenital heart disease (CHD) services from Royal Brompton Hospital.
The plan has yet to go to public consultation and a final decision is unlikely before next summer. However, if it went ahead, it would force all CHD services at Royal Brompton, including our world-leading adult CHD research centre, to close.
It would also force the closure of a range of other services at the Trust, including the children’s intensive care unit and specialist children’s respiratory services such as those for cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and muscular dystrophy.
The Trust strongly disagrees with this proposal. Our CHD service is one of the biggest, safest and most effective in the country and it is clear to us that this plan is not in the best interest of our patients.
