NHS England is currently consulting on plans to decommission congenital heart disease (CHD) services from Royal Brompton Hospital.
If these plans go ahead, it will force all CHD services at Royal Brompton, including our world-leading adult CHD research centre, to close.
It will also force the closure of a range of other services at the Trust, including the children’s intensive care unit and specialist children’s respiratory services such as those for cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and muscular dystrophy.
The Trust strongly disagrees with these plans. Our CHD service is one of the biggest, safest and most effective in the country and it is clear to us that this plan is not in the best interest of our patients.
"We are not against service change, but reconfiguring services must improve care for patients. The sweeping changes to congenital heart disease services proposed by NHS England offer no benefit to patients at all." - Trust chief executive Robert Bell
